Read the essay on p. 244 - I HAVE A DREAM and the essay on p. 351 - SELECTION, SLANTING, AND CHARGED LANGUAGE

Just FYI, if you are more than fifteen minutes late, you will officially be counted absent.

FOR TUESDAY

Go to my UMDrive

Download Dorm.doc and read it. Print out a copy and bring it to class.

Then write a 300 word response (NOT A SUMMARY). You do not have to use parenthetical citations, but it should be formatted correctly and have a word count on the page.

No class on Thursday! See you Tuesday. Don't forget to bring your LANGUAGE AWARENESS books to class.

ASSIGNMENT FOR TUESDAY

Turn in your Reader Response Tuesday. Make sure you follow all the instructions.

FALL BREAK!

No homework over the weekend! Enjoy your break. Although, if you haven't completed a rough draft, I highly recommend that you do it by Monday in order to get any credit (a 5/10 instead of a 10/10). Email it to me.

And remember, you must keep a copy of your textual analysis for the end of the year portfolio - whether it is my graded copy or a printed copy.

FOR CLASS ON THURSDAY 10/11

This Thursday, I'm not taking roll; all I'm doing is taking up a rough draft of the Reader Response. Therefore, if you don't have a rough draft completed, you may as well not come. I will be giving a grade just for completing the rough draft - if you do it, and do it right, you'll get a 10/10. If you don't do it: 0/10.

Remember - Bring TWO copies of the rough draft. One for me and one for your peer groups.
It needs to be typed, but don't worry about format for this assignment - it can be single spaced in any font you want. In order to get credit, you must bring two copies.

Assignment - 10/5/07

Go to the UMDrive. Download the file COLOMBINE.DOC and read it for class on Tuesday. You will have a short quiz at the beginning of class. You must be there by 5:35 to take the quiz. It will not be given late.

Also, a rough draft of your Reader Response paper is due Thursday (before Fall Break). This is a required draft. It must be typed. You can get the file on the UMDrive - Readerresp.doc

FOR THURSDAY

There's no homework, unless of course you haven't finished your paper.

The minimum paper requirement is 500 words, however please note the previous blog post where I said that, in general, 5 papers will be at least 700 words. Papers that are too short will probably receive a 4 at the highest. In looking over your papers, some of them are far too short. I want to emphasize that length of a paper matters.

Check the UMDRIVE to get the latest assignment - the rough draft for your paper due a week from Thursday. It is called Readerresp.doc

Also, there are two other files worth noting:

mlastuff.ppt - the power point presentation I went over last night
kantrhetfinal.doc - a paper I wrote in which the Works Cited is formatted correctly

CLASS ON TUESDAY - IMPORTANT NOTE

I am not canceling class tomorrow, but I am not going to take roll. No one will be counted absent. Because of the U of M football game, I'm allowing you the opportunity to go if you like without penalty. I will be having class, thought it will be shorter; we'll be going over MLA format requirements. If you think you have a pretty good handle on it, you don't have to come. If you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say "MLA format requirements," I highly recommend that you be there.

HOWEVER, I must have a hard copy of your paper if by Tuesday at 8:30 PM at the latest. My office and desk are in Patterson 103. Leave it there if you are not coming to class, or you can hand it to me at the beginning of class.

I hope you go to the game to support the team, especially in light of the recent tragedy.
